Heather_and_students20/20 will perform fundamental science and engineering research that will empower our private sector partners with new knowledge, enabling them to develop innovative proprietary devices including delivery vehicles based on lenses, plugs, posterior drug depots and more.

Specifically we aim to:

  1. Understand the fundamental scientific principles that underlie the biocompatibility of composite and hybrid material platforms when used in the eye
  2. Generate new hybrid materials for ophthalmic device and drug delivery applications
  3. Generate and examine novel materials including microgels, microemulsions and triggerable materials in ophthalmic applications
  4. Improve understanding of the biodistribution of drug delivery vehicles and the pharmacokinetics of released drug delivered to the back of the eye
  5. Use these principles to develop new materials and drug delivery systems for use in the front and back of the eye
  6. Develop in vitro models for examining the biocompatibility of materials and drug delivery systems developed
